Creating a Culture of Radical Fairness
Creating a Culture of Radical Fairness
In this section, we move into the third, and often most overlooked, “R”: Resolving.
If Receiving is about creating a culture of truth-telling and Reviewing is about fostering a culture of curiosity, then Resolving is where those efforts culminate in a culture of radical fairness: a workplace where outcomes are not only just, but also felt to be just.
In this video, I introduce what radical fairness means in practice: balancing accountability with humanity, and ensuring that every resolution process is both rigorous and transparent. Too often, investigations fall apart in this final stretch, when decisions are made on instinct rather than structure, or when leaders focus only on blame instead of learning.
Here, we shift from findings to action. You’ll see how fairness becomes a living practice through my four-step methodology for assessing conduct, context, salvageability, and appropriate remedies. We’ll also explore the concept of forward-looking accountability, the idea that a fair resolution should not only address what happened, but also strengthen trust, culture, and systems moving forward.
By the end of this chapter, you’ll understand how to close cases in a way that truly opens doors: to learning, to fairness, and to a healthier, more resilient workplace.
